Self Tanning for Mature Skin

Achieving a flawless self-tan on mature or dry skin requires the right prep, application techniques and aftercare. Because drier skin types can absorb self-tanner unevenly, the key to a natural, long-lasting glow is hydration and careful blending. We spoke with top self-tanning experts to get their best tips for a streak-free, radiant tan.

Tip 1: Prioritize Hydration for a Smooth Application

“When it comes to self-tanning mature skin, hydration is your best friend,” says Courtney Claghorn, founder of SUGARED + BRONZED. Because mature skin tends to be drier and more textured, she recommends starting with a hydrating routine a full week before tanning. “Moisturizing regularly helps restore the skin’s barrier and creates a supple, even surface for the self-tanner to develop beautifully.”

Isabel Alysa, celebrity tan artist and founder of Dolce Glow and Sunnee BAEskin, echoes this, emphasizing the importance of hydration both internally and externally. “Staying hydrated internally by drinking water and externally by using a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer daily will help your tan fade beautifully instead of getting patchy.”

Tip 2: Exfoliate Gently, but Don’t Overdo It

Exfoliation is key to an even tan, but over-exfoliating and exfoliating at the wrong time can strip the skin and cause irritation. Claghorn suggests using an exfoliating scrub and mitt the night before tanning to remove dead skin cells. “But here’s the trick,” shares Alysa, “Don’t over-exfoliate or use anything too harsh, as that can strip your skin.”

Bethany Menzel, cofounder and creative director of Saltyface, also recommends exfoliating at least 24 hours before application. “You’ll want to make sure that your skin is hydrated and as smooth as possible to keep the tan from settling into any dry areas.”

Tip 3: Apply a Barrier Lotion to Dry Spots

When you’re ready to tan, all of our experts recommend applying a thin layer of lotion to drier areas to avoid uneven patches. “I always recommend applying a light layer of lotion to elbows, knees, hands and feet before tanning,” says Alysa. “This creates a subtle barrier so the self-tanner doesn’t cling too much, preventing those areas from getting too dark or uneven.”

Tip 4: Use the Right Formula for Your Skin Type

Selecting a self-tanner formulated with hydrating ingredients can make all the difference. “Starting with the right product for your skin is the most important first step,” says Menzel. “Using formulas designed specifically for the face and body that are made with hydrating ingredients will help you achieve an even, natural-looking tan,” especially for mature skin types.

Options great for dry and mature skin: non pore-clogging Saltyface Tanning Water ($44), vitamin E–infused S+B Sunless Tanning Mousse ($40) and Dolce Glow Luce Clear Self-Tanning Mist ($48), packed with nourishing oils and hyaluronic acid.

Tip 5: Invest in the Proper Tools

Save your hands and your tan by using self-tanning tools, the key to a smooth, streak-free glow. Claghorn suggests using an applicator mitt for a seamless finish, and Menzel says using a blending brush—we love Saltyface’s luxe linup—is a great way to make sure the product is applied evenly. “A face brush can help with blending so the product doesn’t settle into fine lines,” she adds.

Tip 5: Maintain Your Glow with Proper Aftercare

Once your tan has developed, keeping your skin moisturized will help prevent patchiness as it fades. At the same time, Claghorn advises avoiding activities that strip moisture from the skin. “It’s best to avoid long soaks in hot tubs or extended exposure to chlorinated water. With the right prep and daily hydration, your glow will not only last longer, it will fade evenly.”

Menzel agrees that post-care is often forgotten but is crucial. “Keeping your skin hydrated and maintaining your exfoliation will ensure that your tan fades evenly and your skin is prepped for your next application.”

The Bottom Line

For mature skin, keeping a self-tan from becoming patchy really comes down to two things, says Claghorn: thoughtful prep and ongoing hydration. “Because mature skin tends to be drier and can show texture more easily, the way a tan fades is often directly tied to how well the skin was prepped beforehand.”

Thanks to these expert tips, the perfect natural-looking, non-patchy tan is finally within reach.
