What products should be in a beginner skin-care routine?

“Starting a skin-care routine can be so exciting, and it’s great to focus on affordable options that still deliver fantastic results,” Peterson explains. Peterson and Dr. Garshick agree that the ideal first-time skin-care routine includes a few key products: a gentle cleanser, a hydrating moisturizer and SPF.

Step 1: Cleanser

An essential part of any skin-care routine, Dr. Garshick explains that “A cleanser helps to remove build-up from throughout the day. The CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser ($17) is a great option.” There are many different types of cleansers on the market today, so if you aren’t sure which direction to go, Peterson simplifies it by noting, “If you have oily skin, look for a foaming cleanser. For dry or sensitive skin, a cream or hydrating cleanser works wonders. Brands like CeraVe and Neutrogena offer great budget-friendly options.”

Step 2: A Hydrating Moisturizer

While we all have unique, individualized skin-care needs, Peterson and Dr. Garshick agree that hydration is necessary for any skin-care routine. “A good moisturizer can help keep your skin plump and radiant,” Peterson says. “Try something lightweight like Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream ($19) for a refreshing feel, or a thicker cream if your skin is on the drier side.” Dr. Garshick recommends the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer ($24) as another budget-friendly beginner moisturizer.

Step 3: SPF

Sun protection is a non-negotiable in any skin-care routine, not only to prevent harmful sun damage and skin cancer but also to ward off the effects of aging on the skin. “Daily sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays and prevents premature aging,” Peterson affirms. “Look for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher when hunting for an SPF. La Roche-Posay Anthelios ($34) and CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen ($16) are excellent, affordable options. Reapplication is key with SPF!” Dr. Garshick recommends Elta MD UV Daily Sunscreen ($40) for lightweight sun protection.

Expert Tips for Building a Skin-Care Routine

Once you’ve started your basic skin-care routine focusing on cleansing, hydrating, and protecting, you’ll likely want to expand your routine to tackle your specific skin-care concerns. But, trying out new products can be tricky. So, our experts recommend starting slow. “Gradually add products based on targeted skin concerns, such as a retinoid to address signs of aging skin or breakouts, or a brightening serum to help with discoloration,” Dr. Garshick begins. “For those looking [for] help with prevention of skin aging, it can help to incorporate a vitamin C or antioxidant serum as part of a morning routine and a retinol as part of an evening routine. In general, it is best to introduce one new product at a time to see how the skin reacts.” In addition to starting with a simple routine, Dr. Garshick emphasizes that consistency is key in any skin-care regimen.

Aside from just products, Peterson advises skin-care beginners to drink plenty of water. “Hydrated skin looks plump and healthy,” she says. “Combine that with a good moisturizer for maximum glow. There is no ‘replacement’ for this.” Her other biggest tip: be patient. “Skin care isn’t an overnight miracle,” Peterson assures. “Give products time to work—typically four to six weeks. Consistency is key!” Last but not least, Peterson urges users to enjoy the journey. “Skin care is as much about self-care as it is about looking good. Take time for yourself, enjoy the process, and celebrate your skin’s unique beauty!”

Conclusion:

Developing a skin-care routine can be a daunting task, but with the right guidance, beginners can get started on the path to achieving healthy, glowing skin. By following these expert-recommended steps and tips, you can create a routine that addresses your specific skin concerns and sets you on the path to a brighter, more radiant complexion.
